Quantum Internet Achieves 10Gbps Over 5,000km
A new entanglement relay network shatters distance records for secure quantum communication.
By Leo Ortega
A joint research team has demonstrated a quantum communication link sustaining 10Gbps of entangled-photon throughput across a 5,000-kilometer relay network, a tenfold jump over the previous record. The breakthrough hinges on a new generation of cryogenic quantum repeaters that preserve entanglement fidelity across far longer distances than before.
The achievement brings a globally distributed, provably unhackable quantum internet meaningfully closer, with financial institutions among the first expected to adopt the technology for ultra-secure transactions.
